What’s New

School Theme:  This past summer six staff members traveled to National Parks in the west. This year each classroom will be introduced to the west and National Parks.  Our theme will be the "Wild West".

The students are also participating in a Read Across America project.  Each month we will tally up the number of books read and plot a trail across America.  We will take a break at several locations and celebrate our progress.  The first stop will be Chicago, Illinois for over 9oo miles.  Hmmm, the windy city and deep dish pizza might give us a few ideas for this break!  Students read each night and be sure to log it in your reading journal.

Summer Bookmobile: This past summer the school bookmobile driven by teachers, made many journeys throughout town to distribute books and cookies. This program encourages students to read over the summer, and helps to build a stonger school/home connection.  Each week over one hundred books were circulated to children. Children would share what they read with the teachers and other students.  The biggest stop is the town beach where students took a swimming break to visit the bookmobile.  The reading challenge presented to the children was to read five chapter books over the eight week period.  Thirty-three children received reading medals at Back to School Night in honor of this achievement.  Congratulations students!

Reading Buddies:  This year the fourth and fifth graders become reading buddies ( see images of our buddies) to the first graders every Friday afternoon.  The older buddies have been helping the first graders read their assigned books using the reading strategies that have been introduced to them.  The children look forward to these sessions and sharing books with a special buddy.

Back to School Night & Cookout: On Tuesday, September 18th, at 5:30, we held our annual fall cookout for Back to School Night.  The PTO grilled hotdogs and handed out chips and watermelon to start off our night.  At 6:30 we moved inside to start with important information for our 2007-2008 school year.  Don't miss it!

GrandPals' Day:  On October 19th, 2007 W.E.S. hosted its annual GrandPals Day.  Every student had a grandpal or grandparent for the afternoon.  A fall program was performed by the students, and all enjoyed a scrumptious lunchat the chuck wagon.  The Wild West Theme was presented throughout the day's activities.  Over 100 visitors attended!  Thanks for all who volunteered for this event; parents and grandparents alike.
